Pedestrian dies after being hit by SUV on I-5

A man is dead after being struck by multiple vehicles on I-5 Tuesday morning near the U.S.-Mexico Border.

SAN DIEGO — A pedestrian was killed Tuesday after being hit by several vehicles that were going northbound on Interstate 5 from the San Ysidro Port of Entry, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The collision happened around 3:13 a.m. on Tuesday just south of Dairy Mart Road, according to CHP.

A man was struck by a Mitsubishi Endeavor SUV driven by a 75-year-old man in the slow lane and pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver cooperated with officers, remained on the scene, and talked to the CHP about the crash, which forced the closure of multiple northbound lanes and caused a traffic backup.

Three lanes of Interstate 5 northbound were closed Tuesday morning as officers were investigating. CHP said that their investigation determined the driver was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time.

A toxicology report is still pending to determine if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash.

The cause of this crash, and sequence of events are under investigation by the California Highway Patrol in the San Diego Area.
