SAN DIEGO — The San Diego Police Department is investigating another series of drive-by pellet gun shootings in the Hillcrest neighborhood.
Police are looking into four documented attacks at three bars on University Avenue over the past week. There were at least four victims, and they were not seriously injured. Police are investigating all four incidents as hate crimes.
The attacks spanned September 2 to September 8. According to police, the incidents happened along University Avenue from 3rd Avenue to 10th Avenue. The most recent incident happened around 2 a.m. Sunday.
Police said the suspects were last seen driving a light-colored minivan.
"Whether it's kids out being mischievous or something more serious, we don't know just yet," said SDPD Chief Scott Wahl during an interview with CBS 8 Monday morning.
"We do have Smart Streetlights and license plate readers out there, providing information to us, we have detectives working on that case right now," he added.
"It's traumatizing," said Leane Marchese, Executive Director of San Diego Pride. "It feels as those if you could and will be a target at some point. And you have to be vigilant around that in ways that you wouldn't have to be in other places or communities."
Police investigated a similar series of pellet gun attacks at LGBTQ bars in Hillcrest in May, prompting increased police presence in Hillcrest and surrounding neighborhoods at the time. So far, no arrests have been made.
Though police don't believe the May attacks are tied to these recent incidents, until someone is in custody they won't know for sure.
Anyone with information on the crimes or the people involved should reach out to San Diego Police at (619) 531-2000 or Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
