SAN DIEGO — San Diego Police and California Highway Patrol seized more than a dozen cars involved in two illegal street sideshow takeover events in San Diego County.
Officers from SDPD and CHP seized 13 vehicles through court orders, SDPD said. Two people were arrested on felony vandalism, reckless driving and speeding charges.
SDPD said an investigation has led officers to identify more than 23 cars and multiple individuals who participated in the illegal street takeovers.
The car seizures and arrests stem from two different illegal sideshow take-over events that occurred in February and March.
According to SDPD, on Feb. 24, approximately 200 people attended an illegal street takeover at intersections across San Diego County. SDPD estimated the sideshow event caused an estimated $24,000 in roadway damage
On March 10, SDPD says nearly 200 people attended an “unpermitted” car meet in the parking lot of Target in Mira Mesa that caused an estimated $15,000 in property damage.
The joint investigation is working to identify more individuals who participated in the illegal sideshow events.
The announcement from SDPD comes days after SDPD and CHP successfully prevented a street takeover at the intersection of Ocean View Blvd. and Gloria St. in Lincoln Park on April 27.
One person was arrested for illegal possession of a firearm.
“These sideshows put innocent community members at risk of death or serious injury, while causing thousands of dollars in damage to roadways and private property. Those responsible for these reckless events will be arrested and fully prosecuted,” SDPD said.
