San Diego Police impound 7 cars after investigation into sideshow 'takeovers'

More than 100 people attended multiple street 'takeovers' in San Diego on Dec. 9 and police said they have court orders to impound more cars.

SAN DIEGO — A multi-agency investigation into multiple Dec. 9 street sideshow "takeovers" in San Diego has resulted in the seizing of seven cars.

According to the San Diego Police Department, the seven cars belonged to individuals who participated in multiple sideshow takeovers that happened in National City, Chula Vista and San Diego on Dec. 9.

After the multi-agency investigation, a San Diego court ordered the seizing of the vehicles, which were all impounded on Dec. 21.

“Investigations are currently underway for felony vandalism, reckless driving, exhibition of speed, aiding and abetting, hit and run, and spectating at a sideshow,” said SDPD Lt. Adam Sharki.

San Diego police said more than 100 people attended the street takeovers and have identified more than 20 people who attended or participated in the sideshows.

“Court orders have been obtained to seize additional vehicles for their participation and officers are currently conducting additional operations to impound these vehicles.”

San Diego Police said registered owners who do not comply by the court order to surrender their cars could face criminal prosecution.

“These dangerous acts often result in property damage, hit-and-run collisions, fraud, serious injuries and even death.  These events present a serious danger to both participants and the public.

  • Home Avenue and Fairmount Avenue in San Diego

“These dangerous acts often result in property damage, hit-and-run collisions, fraud, serious injuries and even death.  These events present a serious danger to both participants and the public,” Sharki said.

The San Diego Police Department, El Cajon Police, National City Police, and San Diego California Highway Patrol collaborated in the investigation.

Officers identified over 20 vehicles and multiple individuals who attended the events.
