Port of San Diego approves signing term sheet with Topgolf

Tuesday's vote brings Topgolf one step closer to coming to East Harbor Island.

SAN DIEGO — The Port of San Diego is one step closer to allowing Topgolf to build a venue along the waterfront on East Harbor Island.

The commissioners approved a term sheet with Topgolf. Now that it's approved, a lease agreement can be drafted for consideration by the board sometime next year.

The estimate for the project cost is $61 million. The minimum estimate for rent is $1.5 million a year.

However, the projected rent is closer to $2 million.

There is opposition from some members of the community who say this is not the way this land should be used.

CBS 8 spoke to people out enjoying East Harbor Island Tuesday. Opinions about the project were mixed.

"I live in Chula Vista, I come here for fishing," said Gerardo Yniguez. "It's so peaceful here and so relaxing. It's beautiful. Anything you bring will ruin it."

"I think it would be successful here," said Cindy Famili of Del Mar. "The gorgeous view, It just brings one more activity to do in San Diego, there's a lot of tourists here."

If plans move forward the way Topgolf hopes, construction could begin in late 2025.

James Hammel, Department Manager, Real Estate, Port of San Diego, released the following statement:

"The Port of San Diego is working to bring public recreation and amenities to an area of East Harbor Island where there has never been any public access. Topgolf is only one proposed use. Eleven additional acres of waterfront park space are also planned along with waterfront promenades connecting to the rest of Harbor Island. Our goal is to enhance and activate the San Diego Bayfront for locals and visitors."
