Proposal to expand license plate readers in unincorporated areas in San Diego County

ALPR cameras help law enforcement as a tool to solve crimes like kidnappings, vehicle theft and burglaries.

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, Calif. — The San Diego County Board of Supervisors heard a presentation from the San Diego Sheriff's Office on their proposal to install about 60 Automated License Plate Recognition cameras in unincorporated communities.

“I think it will make a difference and it’ll make a difference everywhere,” Lakeside Resident  Donna Perricone said.

Some of the proposed areas where ALPR devices could make their way are Lakeside, Valley Center and Campo.

“I think it’s wonderful that when a crime is committed or illegal action that they the police will be involved cause I always say where are the police when you need them,”  Perricone said.

ALPR cameras help law enforcement as a tool to solve crimes like kidnappings, vehicle theft and burglaries. The San Diego Sheriff's Office already has this technology in cities like Encinitas, Del Mar and San Marcos.

“I think it’s good for amber alert I think it’s good for security but then there’s us seniors that have trust issues with that you know, like they are trying to track you or you know just with all this stuff that’s going on it’s hard for us to take it all in,” Campo Resident Irene Clark said.

Some people living in the communities where this technology could potentially be installed have mixed feelings about it making its way to their neighborhood.

“I don’t know I got mixed feelings about it, I feel good about it and then I feel like it may be an invasion of privacy in some cases,” Lakeside Resident Joe Morgan said.
