SAN DIEGO — California lawmakers have proposed a bill that would prohibit a person from selling a product or device that could tamper with an e-bike's speed.
AB 1774 is meant to ensure people are not tampering with the speed e-bikes travel. The bill would prohibit a person from selling a product or device that can modify the speed of an e-bike.
“They're fast, they're crazy fast,” La Jolla Resident Russel Moore said.
Moore has witnessed firsthand how dangerous it can be for people to ride at high speeds.
“You can't drive in Pacific Beach in the afternoon particularly during the school year without seeing kids popping wheelies and ripping through the streets, " Moore said.
Assembly member Diane Dixon introduced the bill.
"No one is opposed to it, it's just we want safety … safety features added into these bikes through education and through prohibiting these illegal speed enhancement devices," Dixon said.
High speeds are creating a major concern for people who live near busy neighborhoods.
“There's no doubt that something needs to be done, educational or legislative to kind of change what's happening with e-bikes in the crowded neighborhoods all over the coast, Moore said.
“It's like a seatbelt on a car, like it just makes sense. It's for safety,” Rebekah Robins said.
Dixon said if the bill is signed by Governor Gavin Newsom it would go into effect in 60 days or no later than Jan. 1.
