There's a puppy explosion happening at San Diego Humane Society

"We’ve never seen this many puppies in our care, and so we are calling it a puppy explosion," said Nina Thompson, Director of Public Relations at SD Humane Society.

SAN DIEGO — The San Diego Humane Society said it's experiencing a 'puppy explosion' as overcrowded shelters are now seeing puppies come in in record numbers.

"We’ve never seen this many puppies in our care and so we are calling it a puppy explosion," said Nina Thompson, Director of Public Relations at the San Diego Humane Society. "We started seeing an increase in puppies in May of this year, and in August it absolutely peaked to more than 180 puppies on average a day."

Thompson said breeds you normally wouldn't associate with shelters are coming through their doors.

"We have Maltese, we have Golden Doodles, we have French Bulldogs, we have all kinds of animals and puppies at the San Diego Humane Society right now," she said.

Because shelters nationwide are so crowded, she said they aren't able to help each other out, as they normally would. Thompson said everyone is struggling.

"We're hoping that folks who are looking to add a dog or puppy to their family will visit shelters first because what they're looking for is guaranteed at a shelter or a rescue," she said.

Even if you can't adopt a pet, fostering would be a big help. She said donations are always welcome. They are also looking for volunteers.
