SAN DIEGO — Starting this summer we'll see a decades-in-the-making redevelopment project in Mira Mesa. A long-awaited $43 million renovation project is coming to Mira Mesa Community Park.
"It is exciting they're going to be doing those renovations it definitely could use it," said Sandy who visits the park often.
The project was first envisioned in 2005 and is now coming to fruition. The project includes a new aquatic complex that will have a 14 lane competition pool, a pool for activities and a splashpad.
"This is our first time here. I like this park," said 8-year-old Emma.
CBS 8 talked to Emma while she was playing soccer at the park. She was excited to hear about the new skatepark that will be built near the ballfield.
"I think it will be good for the children. We saw skate people and think they would love it," she said.
The park will get a new playground. The play areas will be separated by age with one for toddlers and another for five to 12-year-old children.
Various organizations use the park to host events and festivals throughout the year.
"This park serves many communities and is also home for not only families, youth but organizations like my own Lao Americans Organization of San Diego," said Bobbie, with the Lao Americans Organization of San Diego.
The San Diego City Council approved $43 million for these improvements Monday. Construction is expected to be completed by Summer 2026.
