Residents raise concerns against proposed warehouse project in Oceanside

Traffic, pollution and emergency access are some of the concerns for those near the proposed project 31-acre site, close to the Oceanside Municipal Airport.

OCEANSIDE, Calif. — A proposed project near an Oceanside neighborhood is growing concerns among residents as they rallied together to spread their message.

CBS 8 Working for You and spoke to residents about their concerns.

“It's the size of the development and its location, the fact that it's going to have 114 bays for the purpose of their trucks to park to gather whatever it is their manufacturing we don't yet know what that is,” Dee Keck said.

The Eddie Jones Project will be located on a 31-acre site, close to the Oceanside Municipal Airport. Right now, the project is undergoing the city's review process and answering comments that came in from the environmental impact report.

“It will be a mix of warehouse, manufacturing and office space,” Eddie Jones Project Community Engagement Liaison Arlene Tendick said.

Tendick tells CBS 8 they commissioned an economics study which found that it would create an estimated 1,400 jobs available in the area. But it's not enough to ease the concerns of neighbors who worry about the impact it will have in their community.

“It's the size of the development and its location, the fact that it's going to have 114 bays for the purpose of their trucks to park to carry whatever it is that they are manufacturing we don't know what that is,” Keck said.

One of Keck’s main worries is how to get out of the neighborhood in case of wildfires especially since many residents expect traffic to get worse.

“We have only two ways to get into and out of this airport community and if the trucks are on bennet and the 500 employee and visitor cars are coming and going on the Foussat Road then we are going to be landlocked in an emergency and we are very nervous about that,” Keck said.

In response to the community's feedback, a right turn lane has been added into the project site.

“At the end of the day, a modern, more efficient, more sustainable building is going to go much further than contaminated empty parcel,” Tendick said.

As to what comes next, Arlene said they are hopeful that the project will proceed to the planning commission in the coming months.
