SAN DIEGO — The San Diego Architectural Foundation has just given out its Orchid and Onion Awards and in Balboa Park, the San Diego Automotive Museum is a recipient of the Orchid award.
The museum is being honored for its restoration and murals. Howard Blackson is an Urban Designer and has been a member of the San Diego Architectural Foundation for over a decade.
"So, the murals here are actually showing the idea of industry as well as an idyllic Spanish community by the Coast. You can really see the details in the murals from the 1930'sthe WPA, the 1935 era," Blackson said.
Which is why the San Diego Automotive Museum is an Orchid.
Orchids can also go to places. Blackson takes us to a kid-friendly award.
"Tecolote Shores is a great park on Mission Bay on the I-5 side. It's a place where families can go, kids can go, especially kids. That can be entertained, out in the natural environment next to the water. It's a special purpose space for entertainment for families," he said.
And now for spaces. The San Elijo Lagoon Pedestrian Bridge under Interstate 5
"San Diego is very fortunate to have a firm Safdie Rabines, one of the best Architecture firms that does bridges. They're the people you hire if you want a bridge to sing. It has the articulating railings, it has the paving, and you have the sound with the vaulted ceiling. You meander through, you can't see everything because you're under a bridge. That moment of being, a sense of place that's unique to you as a bicyclist is fabulous, it's fabulous," he said.
