San Diego County displays new sleeping cabins for those experiencing homelessness

San Diego County leaders gave a tour of the new units designed in collaboration with local businesses and organizations.

SAN DIEGO — San Diego County leaders gave the public a chance to view new cabins designed to help those experiencing homelessness find shelter.

San Diego County in November was asking businesses and organizations to host these cabins as emergency shelters. The County had designated $1.5 million towards purchasing, delivery, and assembly of on-site sleeping cabins.

“There is no single solution to helping people who are homeless, and the small shelters serve as one of the tools we can use. They are good transitional places for people to stay and receive the support they need before moving into a permanent living situation,” said Supervisor Lawson-Remer. “It was good to have the Pallet shelters on display at the County today for our partners to see up close.

Partner organizations that are qualified cover the operations, and establish the on-site infrastructure, zoning, permits, active facilities, and site maintenance.

“The time to act is now. No one should go unsheltered when a shelter village can be built in a day,” said Pallet CEO Amy King. “We commend the efforts of County Supervisor Terra Lawson-Remer to reduce the barriers to enact emergency housing solutions and look forward to working with the County to address this crisis with urgency.”

This tour is part of an 11-city, statewide tour with the shelter provider, Pallet. There are two new Pallet shelters, called the S2 Sleeper (70 sq ft.) and EnSuite (120 sq ft.).
