SAN DIEGO — A fitness center caught fire Thursday in the Midway District, the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department said.
The fire began at 6:45 a.m. Thursday at the Victory MMA and Fitness facility at 3666 Midway Drive, SDFRD officials said.
Crews saw heavy smoke coming from the second floor when they arrived, officials said. Everyone who was inside the building got out before crews arrived.
An occupant of the building reported seeing a fire in the heating unit of the sauna.
Occupants of the Wyndham Hotel next door were evacuated as a precaution.
Midway Drive was closed in both directions between Kemper and Duke streets.
Firefighters were still at the scene as of 7 a.m. working to extinguish the flames shooting through the roof.
