SAN DIEGO COUNTY, Calif. — Today, San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria will be joined by the City Council and civic leaders to highlight how his "Protecting our Progress" budget for the Fiscal Year 2025 prioritizes strategies to address homelessness.
The City Council is scheduled to conduct its final review and potentially make changes to the mayor's proposed budget on Friday.
As part of his 8:30 a.m. Thursday news conference, Gloria will urge the City Council to pass a balanced and fiscally responsible budget that protects core city services while funding an increase in shelter capacity to get people off the street and on a path to long-term housing the mayor's office said in a statement.
The briefing will be at the site known as H Barracks just west of the San Diego International Airport.
Gloria is proposing to expand the city's Safe Parking Program, which offers people experiencing homelessness a safe and legal place to sleep in their vehicles while accessing services to help end their homelessness. This would be the city's fifth Safe Parking location, able to accommodate roughly 200 vehicles, which would nearly double the size of the program.
The mayor's budget includes funding for a large-scale shelter and services campus that would serve about 1,000 people at a time.
Combined, the city's General Fund and the San Diego Housing Commission's budgets allocate more than $200 million to address housing and homelessness.
