San Diego hosts major law enforcement convention

Organizers say the International Association of Chiefs of Police conference is the largest and most impactful law enforcement event of the year.

SAN DIEGO — Thousands of law enforcement personnel from around the world are in San Diego for the International Association of Chiefs of Police annual conference.

It's the first time since 2016 San Diego has hosted the event.

Organizers tell CBS 8 it’s the largest and most impactful law enforcement event of the year. It’s where they learn new techniques, as well as network with agencies from around the world.

The convention started October 12th and runs through October 17th.

Six hundred vendors have taken over the convention floors, showcasing the latest in law enforcement tools and technology. There are also classes covering a number of topics including the flux of migrants coming across our border, as well as the growing fentanyl crisis.

San Diego Police Department Assistant Chief Scott Wahl explained why this type of convention is so crucial.

“We learn from each other when we see innovative approaches that maybe we're not applying in one jurisdiction or one part of the country. That sharing of information, that networking, you bring in the vendors that are providing all of the latest technology out there - it really advances policing.  It makes us more efficient, more effective in how we do this job.”

Assistant Chief Wahl says law enforcement agencies all over, including the San Diego Police Department are dealing with staff shortages, so a lot of what they're learning at the convention is based on how to combat crime with fewer officers.

San Diego will serve as host city again in 2034.
