SAN DIEGO — San Diego Police arrested the man suspected of stabbing a 25-year-old pregnant woman in a parking lot multiple times, authorities announced Sunday.
The assault occurred around 9:55 a.m. Saturday at 8251 Mira Mesa Blvd. at a shopping center in the Mira Mesa neighborhood, according to the San Diego Police Department. He made no statements or demands prior to or during the attack, and no property was taken, police said.
Police said in a press conference Sunday that the victim "valiantly" kicked and defended herself from the suspect before witnesses ran to her aid.
"It may have been the witnesses that came over, citizen heroes, who may have been the final intervening factor to stop the attack," Detective Sgt. Erik Drilling said.
The victim sustained deep cuts to her neck, left shoulder and chin, and was taken by ambulance to a local hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Police identified the suspect as 27-year-old Cole Klemke. Police say he's a Carmel Valley resident and is considered homeless at this time.
Klemke was booked into San Diego Central Jail on one charge of attempted murder in the first degree. He will be arraigned on June 20.
His motive was unclear.
Police say the woman was released from the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and is now home.
