SAN DIEGO — San Diego police officers arrested a driver on Sunday who fled from an attempted traffic stop near Pacific Beach.
Just before 1 p.m., California Highway Patrol attempted to pull over the man who was travelling at speeds nearing 100 miles per hour on Interstate 5 near Garnet Avenue. A pursuit followed before the driver stopped the car on Bluffside Street, exited the vehicle and ran into a nearby river channel.
CHP and SDPD officers searched for the driver who waded into the river before giving himself up to police, according to Sgt. Cory Mapston.
Sgt. Mapston said the suspect would face a felony charge of failing to yield and may face other charges pending investigation.
The suspect identified himself to police as Miguel Guerrero, Mapston said. The sergeant said the man was being evaluated by medics for heat exhaustion but was going to be OK.
A police helicopter also searched the scene from above while K-9 units were used on the ground.
