San Diego residents rally at Chicano Park over City's flood response

People gathered at Chicano Park on Wednesday intent on marching to City Hall to voice their disappointment with the City's response to January's flooding.

SAN DIEGO — Over a dozen residents at Chicano Park were calling out the City of San Diego for what they said was a complete failure to the community and negligence.

These are people from Mountain View and South Crest neighborhoods.

This is all happening with the help of Unión del Barrio along with the Chicano Steering Committee.

They said so far their requests haven't been heard and that's been the issue all along. They said they wanted to voice their concerns and frustration of many flood victims from southeastern San Diego.

For years, they said they've asked the city to clean up the flood channels and to check the storm drains. They said they asked the city to inspect their neighborhood to avoid catastrophic events like what happened on January 22.

One speaker said he left work after his family called him on January 22 to notify him that their street was flooding. He said that he knew at that moment that the storm drains hadn’t been cleaned out.

He also said that he, along with other neighbors attempted to unclog the storm drains once they started seeing water levels rising.

Others said they had to climb onto their roofs for safety.

There have been families who lost valuables, important documents, and personal items that have been passed down from generation to generation.
