SAN DIEGO — Winter break for San Diego County students is coming up. We're Working for You and have a way you can search for the dates of your child's break.
Below is an interactive search tool for the holidays for the 2023-2024 school year. Just type in your child's school district and see what holidays they have off.
While some of these dates may be subject to change, it is always best to check directly with the school district for the most up-to-date information.
As families prepare for the holiday winter break that could mean juggling childcare for many parents. CBS 8's Shannon Handy talked to parents in the San Diego Unified School District during the Thanksgiving holiday break and found many parents were worried about how to handle childcare during the days when school was out and remembering what it was like when they were kids, saying things are much different now.
While parents may feel the strain more prominently than years prior, the legally mandated amount of instruction days has not changed, just the way they are distributed.
"The changes to the school year do not impact the number of instructional days. Students continue to receive 180 instructional days," a spokesperson with the San Diego Unified School District said.
But families still say they are left scrambling for care.
“That is a lot time off parents have to consider and worry about getting coverage for their kids,” said Richard Beitey, a father of two.
He's also the president of The Whole Child Learning Company, which provides on-campus aftercare programs as well as holiday camps for kids.
Whole Child adjusts its offerings to mirror the district's academic calendar, but they're limited based on space and staff.
"So, there might be 100 parents at a school that want a program that they can send their kids to on half days, but there might only be enough space for 10 or 20 students," said Beitey.
Other possible options include camps at the YMCA and the Krause Family Skate & Bike Park.
