Improving San Diego's Gaslamp Promenade may cost $65 million

Renovating San Diego's Gaslamp Promenade might cost millions more than anticipated.

SAN DIEGO — Renovating San Diego's Gaslamp Promenade might cost millions more than anticipated. A new study shows the price tag may cost as much as $65 million. The project would transform 7 blocks of Fifth Avenue from Broadway to K Street.

"We're on a culinary crusade to try to find something fun over here to eat," said Henry. He and Kylie visited from Orange County on Monday.

"I really love how the streets are blocked off here and it allowa for the pedestrian traffic and a much safer environment," he said.

The area became more pedestrian-friendly last summer. Silver bollards went up to block traffic from noon to 2 a.m.

"Walkability is everything especially in San Diego you got the great weather," said Michael Trimble, executive director of the Gaslamp Quarter Association.

Plans to beautify the promenade began in 2019 right before COVID and are estimated to cost around $45 million. Now a new feasibility study from a consulting firm estimates the cost to renovate is around $65 million.

"We did a feasibility study back in 2019 and it was about $45 million dollars and we talked about everything you have to do with redevelopment. In that amount of time, I can see prices going up. It wasn't so surprising to me it would go up," Trimble said.

Trimble says he's meeting with the mayor next month to further discuss the project. Tonight I reached out to the city and A  spokesperson says they're evaluating the new study and avenues to find funding. Grants could help pay for the project.

The project renderings show the sidewalks and streets covered in bricks and many more trees planted. They look to add more performance areas, street furniture and improve storm drains.  As of now, there's no timeline for when construction might begin.
