Scratch-offs: Luck? or can you increase your odds?

According to the California Lottery, last fiscal year, Californians spent more than $5 billion on scratchers alone.

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, Calif. — Is it pure luck, or is there a way to increase the odds of winning on the lottery scratch off tickets?

According to the California Lottery, last fiscal year, Californians spent more than $5 billion on scratchers alone.

But what if you could increase your odds of winning simply by logging onto a website?

Jared James recently created the website Lottoedge, which crunches state lottery data to predict your odds of winning.

“Most people do not do research ahead of time, so they are just guessing. What if you knew the game here has three times better than the game next to it? We are just trying to give players that info let them make their own decisions,” he said.

Lottoedge is not working in California yet, but James is working on that; however, scratchoffodds.com’s creator is James Carmer.

“What we do is calculate the expected return on investment for every lottery ticket you buy,” said Carmer.

Some customers took the advice on Carmer’s site, but the results were not great. One man won, but he purchased four tickets.

“One ticket is all I won out of all tickets. The website did not work for me. I am not saying it doesn’t work at all. I guess luck was not on my side today,” said the customer.

Neither of the websites make any guarantees.
