SD Humane Society kittens sent to Oregon for adoption

After an animal shelter transfer went wrong last year, viewers reached out to CBS 8 to see how the SD Humane Society and Oregon Humane Society kitten transfer went.

SAN DIEGO — Two of the 31 San Diego kittens sent to Oregon by the San Diego Humane Society are still looking for their forever home.

In June, 119 kittens and seven dogs were loaded onto a plane and flown from El Cajon to Portland, Oregon. The kittens came from San Diego Humane Society and Orange County Animal Care

Once the plane landed, the pets were transferred into the care of the Oregon Humane Society.

"Here at Oregon Humane Society, we have a long history of working with shelter partners and doing animal transports. We've been doing this for more than 20 years," Laura Klink with the Oregon Humane Society said.

After an animal shelter transfer went wrong last year, viewers reached out to CBS 8 to see how the SD Humane Society and Oregon Humane Society kitten transfer went.

The transfer helped the San Diego Humane Society as they deal with hundreds of cats during peak kitten season. Greater Good Charities connected them with Oregon Humane Society, who had more room for cats.

"It's really about all of us working together to figure out who is at a point where maybe they can take some animals, who is at a point where maybe they need to transport out some animals to be able to to maintain a good level of care," Klink said.

The transfer came nearly a year after the San Diego Humane Society sent more than 300 small animals to a shelter in Arizona. 250 of the animals ended up with a reptile breeder who sold live and frozen animals as reptile food.

"What happened was, you know, very surprising and devastating to all of us here," Jordan Frey with the San Diego Humane Society said.

Viewers reached out to CBS 8 to see how the Oregon transfer went, and it was successful.

"We're definitely taking every precaution and working with organizations and groups that are nationally renowned to make sure that we are doing everything we can to ensure animals are going to the best places and homes," Frey said.

San Diego Humane Society and Oregon Humane Society have partnered together in the past and hope to again in the future.

"Having these partnerships with shelters like San Diego Humane and other shelters in California when they're really at that crisis point, we can be here to provide that life saving assistance," Klink said.

San Diego Humane Society has 940 cats in it's care right now, including 300 adoptable kittens. Adoption fees are just $25 for the entire month of July. Peak kitten season is in full swing, Frey said they expect to keep getting kittens until October or November.
