SDPD releases body camera video from fatal officer involved shooting

Curtis Harris is seen running from officers and firing a gun, hitting one officer in the head.

SAN DIEGO — San Diego police released multiple body camera videos today from a shooting involving police officers earlier this month outside a grocery store in 4S Ranch.

It started around 11:30 PM on Dec. 7 when a woman called 911 to report that she’d spotted her stolen car in Ralph’s parking lot. Police said it was taken a few days earlier during a domestic violence incident.

In one of the videos, you can see officers spotted Curtis Harris while he was shopping in the store. The caller warned officers that Harris usually carries a gun and when they tried to confront him, Harris took off, running out of the store.

Sgt. Anthony Elliott was outside the front doors and saw Harris coming. You can hear him say “Hey, come here” on the video.

Elliott then followed Harris into a shopping cart corral. The video shows what appears to be Harris reaching for a weapon before jumping over a wall and firing the weapon at Elliott, hitting him in the head.

It appears in the video that Harris then fired his gun in the direction of another officer before running away. At least three officers returned fire, hitting Harris who fell to the ground and later died from his injuries. With Harris on the floor, you can hear officers yelling for Harris to let go of this gun. They’re also telling each other to back up.

In the chaos of the moment, officers didn't immediately realize that Elliott wasn't standing there with them. A few seconds later, an officer asks if everyone is ok. At that point, they discover Elliott is missing and an officer runs over to the shopping carts and finds him injured on the ground.

Elliott was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, but CBS 8 received several pictures on Monday that show him in the hospital Sunday with a special visitor - the biker dog, Chopper Junior.

In the pictures, you can see Elliott is not only alert but smiling and petting the popular pooch.

A fundraiser has been set up to help Elliott’s family pay for future expenses, including uncovered medical bills, a home rehabilitation gym, and to fly family members out to help take care of his two young sons as needed.
