SDSU will increase police patrols over Labor Day weekend

In addition to the physical patrolling, safety tips are communicated in a few ways including; online content, videos, campus emails and news center stories.

SAN DIEGO — San Diego State University is increasing the use of saturated patrols starting Friday as part of the university’s commitment to campus safety.

Commonly referred to as DUI checkpoints, campus police will be in full force with the start of a new school year.

SDSU freshman Andrew Lee said he rolls on to campus care free.

“I just feel pretty safe. I haven't had any encounters that make me feel uncomfortable. Even late at night, I often spend time walking around with friends and stuff. I just keep my backpack and skateboard close at all times,” said Lee.

University officers have partnered with the San Diego Police Department in carrying out saturated patrols all weekend long.

"At the start of the school year we often see alcohol related crimes. Whether it's DUI or public intoxication, but we also see a lot of theft crimes and robberies,” said Lt. Ruben Villegas, SDPD.

Lt. Ruben Villegas said safety tips students can keep in mind is always to be aware of surroundings, especially when walking alone with headphones.

“Secure your belongings making sure you don't leave them unattended. Lock your cars don't leave your property visible."

DUI patrols will increase Labor Day weekend for the big Aztec football game, but DUI patrols will also increase throughout San Diego County.

In addition to the patrols, some students are taking advantage of the free shuttle ride services.

“I feel pretty safe because I like to go to the gym at night and they offer the Red and Black shuttle service which is really awesome. So, I don't have to walk by myself,” said Maycee Mosley.

Maycee, who is a freshman and is her first time away from her small hometown in the Bay Area, said a lot of her friends in the dorm have been carrying pepper spray.
