SAN DIEGO — SeaWorld San Diego's "Electric Eel" rollercoaster was shut down by California safety regulators after the amusement park reported a person was injured on the ride.
Cal/OSHA's Amusement Ride and Tramway Unit received reports on Friday, June 9 that a person riding the Electric Eel coaster sustained a leg injury, a representative with Cal/OSHA told CBS 8.
San Diego Fire Department confirmed that a man in his 20s was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center in Hillcrest to be treated for his injuries.
"He was transported "Code 20," Mónica Muñoz, the Media Services Manager for San Diego Fire-Rescue Department said.
"Code 20" refers to first responders transporting a victim with acute trauma.
The extent of the injuries was not detailed.
"Riders of Electric Eel will drop from heights of 150 feet while getting boosted 60 mph forwards and backward through looping twists and an inverted heartline roll," according to SeaWorld.
SeaWorld San Diego was requested to temporarily shut down the ride while Cal/OSHA investigated the incident.
The theme park is required to report an injury or accident on a permanent amusement ride, according to Cal/OSHA's website.
SeaWorld San Diego declined to comment on the incident.
The investigation could take up to six months.
No time frame or estimated date for Electric Eel's reopening was provided.
