Two children dead after San Diego police pursuit ends in Mountain View after fiery crash

The chase began around 6:14 p.m. The male driver hit another car as he tried to exit the 43rd Street freeway offramp.

SAN DIEGO — Two small children were killed Friday evening after a vehicle police were pursuing crashed into another car, San Diego Police confirmed. 

The pursuit started around 6:14 p.m. at 32nd Street and Oceanview Boulevard in the Logan Heights neighborhood. Police followed 20-year-old Angel Salgado in a BMW sedan to Interstate 805 southbound. As he tried to exit onto 43rd Street offramp, he crashed into a Honda sedan with four people inside. Salgado soon abandoned the car and fled the scene. The driver is now in custody.

The car the Salgado collided with burst into flames and ended up in an embankment, police said. The two children and two adult women who were in the vehicle Salgado crashed into were transported to the hospital. The Honda was driven by a 25-year-old woman and her three passengers were a 29-year-old woman, an eight-year-old boy and a four-year-old boy, according to California Highway Patrol. 

The two boys were pronounced dead at the hospital, CHP officials said. 

Salgado was arrested and booked into San Diego Central Jail on $1 million bail. He is charged with hit and run that resulted in death and/or great bodily injury, evading police with disregard to safety and great bodily injury. He is expected to appear in court Dec. 13 for his arraignment. 

A SigAlert was issued after the crash around 6:43 p.m. in the Mountain View area. The 43rd Street southbound exit was reopened Saturday just before 11 a.m., according to Caltrans.
