CHULA VISTA, Calif. — Update:

Chula Vista Police have deemed the previously active SWAT scene clear and residents near the 500 block of D Street can return home.

Police said on Twitter the suspect exited the home and surrendered to officers Friday evening without further incident. He is in custody for negligent discharge of a firearm.

Original story:

Chula Vista Police have asked some neighbors along the 500 block of D Street to shelter in place or evacuate due to a SWAT standoff with an armed man Friday afternoon.

Authorities were called around 12:30 p.m. regarding a welfare check along the 500 block of D Street. The call soon evolved into a man discharging his firearm into a ground and out a window, according to Chula Vista Police on Twitter

Police also said no one was believed to be targeted or struck by gunshots.

The man barricaded in the home is presumed to be alone, police say.

Chula Vista authorities ask the public to avoid the area and use alternative routes if possible. The situation is still active as of 6 p.m.

The suspect is described as a white man in his early 40s with brown hair, no shirt and blue shorts.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
