South Bay community illuminates the night in honor of domestic violence victims and survivors

The 'Light up the Night' event was organized by several local groups including the South Region Coalition of the San Diego Domestic Violence Council.

BONITA, Calif. — Victims of domestic violence were honored in an emotional candlelight vigil in the South Bay as part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

The 'Light up the Night' event was organized by several local groups including the South Region Coalition of the San Diego Domestic Violence Council. It aimed at sending a powerful message of support to survivors.

San Diegans and community leaders illuminated the night to draw awareness to domestic violence.

“Domestic violence is a public health crisis, it’s a public safety crisis, it is so imperative that families at home feel safe," said San Diego Domestic Violence Council President Dr. Vanessa Rodriguez.

“Fear has no place in a healthy relationship," said Chula Vista Police Chief Roxana Kennedy.

Attendees held a vigil to honor the lives lost last year in our county.

“We lost 14 people just last year in our county alone. Every moment there are multiple victims,” said survivor Kelsey Hamlett.

Hamlett now helps victims in the county as a deputy district attorney.

“Domestic violence was a regular occurrence and ultimately in 2007 my mother was murdered. “As a child I didn’t know that this was something that isn’t normal I though that everyone’s homes operated like mine," said Hamlett.

Hamlett works to prosecute family protection cases, domestic violence, and other crimes. She says she shares her story with the hope that other victims can feel seen and heard.

Officials say many domestic violence cases go unreported and urge those stuck in the vicious cycle to reach out for help.
