SAN DIEGO — Drivers going through Hillcrest during the October 14- October 15 weekend should be prepared to take alternate routes, according to Caltrans. Crews will be working on a new pedestrian bridge on SR-163 and 6th Avenue on and off ramps that connect to Scripps Mercy Hospital.

  • The eastbound connector ramp of I-8 to southbound SR-163 towards Hillcrest will close Saturday, October 14 starting at 3 a.m. through Sunday, October 15 at 9 p.m.
  • Eastbound drivers on I-8 will be detoured northbound to the SR-163 connector ramp to Friars Road West off-ramp. Drivers may turn right towards the southbound SR-163 on-ramp.
  • Drivers on the southbound section of SR-163 and 6th Avenue should exit at Washington Street East off-ramp to 4th Avenue. Drivers may turn right for Scripps Mercy Hospital or turn left towards Hillcrest.

This work is subject to change due to weather, traffic conditions, or other considerations.

Caltrans reminds drivers to be aware and watch out for highway workers and moving equipment, as well as be alert while in a work zone.

Previously in September, Caltrans closed portions of I-5 for two weekends to make repairs to the bridge deck over SR-163. “Usually when we deal with long closures, we do have drivers who are impatient that why we are starting today to urge drivers to take more time to get to their destinations,” said Salvador Castro, CHP Public Information Officer about the September closures.
