SAN DIEGO — A 26-year-old woman was killed in the Downtown area early Monday morning after being ejected through the windshield of a speeding car driven by an allegedly drunk woman.
First responders were called to 1st Avenue and B Street around 3 a.m. in the Downtown San Diego area following reports of a crash, according to Officer Foster with San Diego police.
The crash happened near the Civic Plaza parking structure.
Video from OnScene.TV showed a 2003 Toyota left disabled in lanes of traffic, missing a wheel, and the windshield ripped to shreds off the vehicle's body.
An investigation conducted by San Diego police revealed a 24-year-old woman was driving northbound near 1200 First Avenue at a "speed that was unsafe for conditions" when the sedan struck a guard rail and violently rolled over.
A 26-year-old woman who was riding in the front passenger seat was ejected through the windshield of the car and killed on the scene, according to officers.
Video showed a body lying under a yellow tarp quite some distance from where the car came to a stop.
San Diego police said the driver of the car exhibited obvious objective symptoms of driving under the influence of alcohol and was arrested.
The condition of the driver was unknown.
An investigation by the San Diego Police Traffic Division was underway to determine further what led up to the crash.
