Study: San Diego ranks worst U.S. city for parking

The research looked at parking prices, the number of electric vehicle charging options and the number of wheelchair-accessible parking spaces.

SAN DIEGO — San Diego has been named the worst city in the country for parking. It's also ranked among the most expensive, according to a new study by car subscription service Finn. Three California cities — including Riverside and Long Beach — made the top 10 list for worst parking, but San Diego takes first place on availability.

CBS 8 spoke with San Diego drivers who said it's difficult to find parking on a regular basis.

“On Friday nights it’s like circling for 20 minutes," said San Diegan Kevin Chen.

San Diego resident Spencer Kemp agreed.

“[It] took us a while to find parking, and it could be better I would say," he said.

The research looked at parking prices, the number of electric vehicle charging options and the number of wheelchair-accessible parking spaces.

“It is pretty tough to find EV parking around San Diego," Chen said. "I know a lot of people charge at their workplaces which is nice, but when you’re out and about and you need a quick charge it’s definitely not easy."

San Diegans say finding parking can be challenging and they’re not surprised the city took the top spot.

“It just creates a big inconvenience about trying to plan out your day and then you get to a spot you’re trying to go and now you can't find a place to park," said resident Jordan Fabbrini.

Many say they try to get to places early enough just to find a spot to park.

“We are 45 minutes early to our reservation for that reason," added Kemp.

Long Beach, CA is tied with Fort Worth, Texas in second place. Riverside came in sixth place.

San Diego also ranks sixth on the list of most expensive parking – with the monthly cost of parking starting at $200.
