Big Wig | Susan G. Komen San Diego celebrates breast cancer research supporters

The Komen San Diego team, breast cancer survivors and supporters gathered in an appreciation cruise along the bay.

SAN DIEGO — Pink bows, champagne and decorations brightened a cruise filled with people dedicated to support Susan G. Komen San Diego as it made a celebratory trip around the bay.

CBS 8’s Chief Meteorologist Karlene Chavis was recognized Sunday for her contributions

“I raised 7,175 dollars which is crazy because our goal was 5,000,” Chavis said.

Karlene participated in the Big Wig campaign in March. She wore a pink big wig to raise awareness and funds to fight breast cancer.

“When it comes to the money it's raised, the one thing I love the most about it is that it stays here in San Diego County," Chavis said. "You're talking about helping San Diegans as they struggle with breast cancer trying to get them the access to care that they need,” Chavis said.

The Big Wig campaign raised $13,440. It's money that will make a huge impact in the lives of people who need it the most.

”Diagnosis is something that is going to continue to happen and the earlier that it happens the better,” Jennifer Silverwood said.

The More Than Pink Walk raised more than $500,000 in 2023. Its funds will go into their mission of investing into research, direct patient care and breast health inequities.

Susan G. Komen provides resources, support and a community for people fighting breast cancer which helps people like Dolly Davis, a breast cancer survivor.

Davis said on days when she felt beaten down or emotional about her breast cancer journey, she'd call representatives from the org for support.

"They'll give you resources and it's amazing, she said. "I'm so grateful for Susan G. Komen."

Jennifer Silverwood was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2022. It was caught early at stage zero ductal carcinoma in situ. But her passion to support a cause that helps people fighting cancer started years before her diagnosis. She's been part of the 'More Than Pink Walk' for about a decade and now forms part of the committee.

“Without the people that are on this cruise today, Susan G. Komen couldn't be what it is,” Silverwood said.
