EL CAJON, Calif. — A man suspected in the December 10 armed bank robbery of a Wells Fargo branch in El Cajon is now behind bars, according to a search warrant obtained by CBS 8.

Maurice Carter has been identified as a suspect in the robbery after law enforcement tracked his getaway car to his Spring Valley home. According to federal prison records, Carter is now incarcerated at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in San Diego.

The Robbery

On Tuesday, December 10, the suspect, described as a Black man wearing a dark-colored Nike jacket, a black hat, jeans, and glasses, entered the Wells Fargo branch located at 475 Fletcher Parkway in El Cajon.

The robber approached a teller and immediately pointed a gun at him. He pushed a bag toward the teller with his other hand and whispered, "You know what to do."

Fearing for his life, the search warrant stated the teller filled the bag with $9,081 and handed it back to the robber. The robber then immediately left the bank

Surveillance footage taken from a nearby gym, as well as a jewelry store, showed the robber parked a black Cadillac in front of the gym moments before the robbery. The same cameras then showed the suspect returning to the Cadillac, holding a bag that resembled the one used in the robbery, getting back into the car, and driving off.

Detectives who were investigating tracked down the license plate to Maurice Carter's address in Spring Valley and monitored Carter's movements.

Investigators noticed Carter wearing the same ripped jeans and blue shirt as the man who robbed the bank. They also saw Carter holding a white bag. Carter also wore the same Nike tennis shoes as the man who robbed the bank and had black-rimmed glasses in his vehicle.

According to the search warrants, Carter has an extensive criminal record that includes convictions for weapons possession, carrying a loaded firearm, domestic violence, sex with a minor, another domestic violence charge, and making false statements to police.

Federal prisoner registries show Maurice Carter is now being held at the Metropolitan Correction Center in Downtown San Diego.
