The election isn't just the presidential race. Local items are on the ballot too.

While the big ticket item is the presidential race, there are also many items on the ballot that affect us locally, including sales tax measures and local races.

SAN DIEGO — While the big ticket item this election is the presidential race, there are also many items on the ballot that affect San DIego County  locally. This includes two sales tax measures and local races, including mayoral and congressional seats.

On the ballot is Measure G, a half-cent sales tax for the entire county to help pay for road repairs, carpool lanes and mostly public transit.

CBS 8 spoke with Supervisor Jim Desmond who said No to Measure G.

"I wouldn't give another dime to SANDAG because they don't keep their promises and they mismanage the money," Desmond said. "They've got a history of mismanagement."

We also spoke with Manny Rodriguez with the City Heights Community Group that is part of Yes for Measure G.

"It'll reduce congestion for everybody, even if you don't use transit," Rodriguez said. "And if you do use transit, it'll make it so much better."

You can watch the full interview here.

Measure G isn't the only sales tax measure on the ballot. If passed, Measure E would add a 1% sales tax in the City of San Diego. The money would go to neighborhood upgrades including fixing potholes, streets and sidewalks.

Mayor Todd Gloria supports the measure.

"A penny is a small investment that will actually save consumers, I think, more in the long run," Gloria said.

His opponent, Larry Turner, is against the measure. He thinks there are better sources for new funding.

"I'm looking at some of the special revenue funds that we have set aside, we've got about a billion dollars there that can get us started in this process," Turner said.

The City of San Diego mayoral race is another ballot item. Gloria is the incumbent facing Turner, a SDPD officer and former marine.

We'll also be keeping an eye on California's 49th Congressional District, which includes the northern coastal areas of San Diego County.

Incumbent Democratic Rep. Mike Levin will be facing Republican Matt Gunderson.
