Thieves break into 35 storage units at a Public Storage facility in Lemon Grove

Investigators with the San Diego Sheriff’s Department say one person is in custody. Deputies believe the suspects stole more than $84,000 worth of items.

LEMON GROVE, Calif. — One person is in custody after a brazen theft at a Public Storage facility in Lemon Grove.

Several thieves broke into over three dozen units and stole thousands of dollars worth of valuables. The burglary took place overnight on Wednesday, December 6 just after 8:00 p.m. through Thursday, December 7 just before 3:30 a.m.

“It’s all gone. It was just so normal for them," said one victim, Matthew Rosenberg.

Surveillance video shows the moment thieves walk away with thousands of items belonging to Rosenberg and his partner, Dina Chan.

“I’ve been crying on and off for the last couple days," Rosenberg said. "It’s not just material possessions, a lot of the stuff holds special meaning to me and us. A lot of keepsakes that we bought each other, there’s some family items in there that date back when I was born."

The video the couple shared with CBS 8 only shows some of the people involved, including a child.

Rosenberg says it appears they thieves knew what they were doing.

“It was very coordinated," he said. "They rolled in with multiple cars, several people, they had kids with them, the kids were involved they were taken stuff out."

Among the items inside the couple storage unit, was a priceless collection of comic books Rosenberg had been collecting since he was a child. Some of the items are worth several thousand dollars.

“It’s infuriating. Anger, sadness. It’s been a very emotional past couple of days," added Rosenberg.

The couple is among the 35 families who were targeted by the thieves shown in the video.

“It’s jaw dropping, it’s incredible what they did, it’s disgusting," he continued.

Investigators with the San Diego Sheriff’s Department say they’ve arrested one person so far.

Damage to the units is estimated at nearly $10,000 and deputies believe the suspects stole more than $84,000 worth of items from the units. The dollar amount is likely to be higher.

“There’s a lot of families that were affected, it’s not just us, and it’s just heartbreaking especially before the holidays," said Rosenberg.

The couple now hopes to recover the items and see the people involved face justice.

“We want to get our stuff back and we want to see the people responsible prosecuted to the fullest extent," said Rosenberg.
