Thousands without power as outage affects SDG&E customers

Thousands of customers in the Encinitas and North Park areas were affected by a power outage Friday morning.

SAN DIEGO — Thousands of SDG&E customers found themselves without power on Friday morning. The San Diego Gas & Electric outage map showed more than 6,000 people without power as of 6:10 AM. 

As of 7 AM, the number of outages is down to about 2,000 customers. 

Power is expected to return to customers in Encinitas, Cardiff-by-the-Sea, Olivehain by 9:30 AM, according to SDG&E's website. 

Power will be restored to customers at University Heights, North Park, and Normal Heights by noon, according to SDG&E's website. 

SDG&E is working to determine what caused the outage in Encinitas while crews in the North Park area have located SDG&E equipment in need of repair. 

The cause of these outages has yet to be determined. 

Initial outages were reported Thursday in the University Heights and North Park area around 10:19 PM.

Safety & preparedness tips from San Diego Gas & Electric

  • Report downed electrical lines or gas emergencies to San Diego Gas & Electric at 800-411-7343
  • Do not touch any downed power lines or broken gas lines. Report them immediately to the police or fire department
  • Do not touch someone if they made contact with a power line
  • If evacuating, disconnect all electrical appliances, turn off electricity at the panel, gas service at the meter and water at the main valve
  • Secure loose outdoor items like umbrellas, garbage pins, and patio furniture to prevent them from flying away and damaging power lines
  • Drive slower and allow for more braking
  • Have an essential supplies kit. Keep a battery-operated radio and flashlights handy.  Do not rely on solely candles for lighting
  • Have backup power arrangements for any medical equipment
