SAN DIEGO — A new report ranks San Diego as one of the most popular cities in the United States to be a cat owner.
According to U.S. News and World Report, San Diego is the seventh most popular city to be a cat parent. Six western cities were ranked on the publication's top 10 list, accounting for a large number of cat owners in America.
More than 28 million homes across the country have at least one cat, the study says.

Why?
- In the study, densely populated cities like Los Angeles, New York City and Chicago ranked high for cities with the most cats. The study cites apartment life, which is common in big cities, as the reason why cats can be better suited than dogs due to their size.
- According to U.S. News and World Report, cats are appealing to busy "urban dwellers" because they are usually considered independent pets.
- Larger cities have been known to hold cat-friendly events. In San Diego, feline lovers flock to the San Diego Cat Fanciers Cat Show. The event showcases the beauty and agility of cats, also offering educational talks and cat adoption opportunities.
