Travelers hit the skies, railroads for a busy Thanksgiving week

The San Diego Airport estimates as many as 84,000 people will arrive and depart daily during Thanksgiving week.

SAN DIEGO — The San Diego County Regional Airport Authority estimates as many as 84,000 passengers will arrive and depart each day during the busy Thanksgiving holiday travel week.

If you are planning to fly out of the San Diego International Airport remember, construction is still heavy because of the new Terminal 1 parking plaza that’s under construction.

Airport parking is extremely limited but there is parking available at the Terminal 2 parking plaza.

Here are a couple tips:

— Arrive at least two hours early to avoid the busiest times which are 4 a.m. to 6:15 a.m., 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and 8 p.m. to 12 a.m.

— Make parking reservations.

— Take the free San Diego Flyer shuttle service between the Old Town Transit station or have family or friends drop you off or use rideshare services.

As far as travel across the nation goes, there are nearly 50,000 scheduled flights are expected on Wednesday alone.

It’s why the FAA is opening up extra airspace. Which is very rare and is usually reserved for the military. Here's what transportation officials are saying about it.

"We know that people are trying to get from one place to another and it's our goal and hope to get everyone where they need to go as safe as possible," Monica Tibbits-Nutt MassDOT Secretary said.

"So, if you're feeling a little stressed about security, give yourself some extra time," Cyrus Sarkari said, Managing Director of Customer Service with United.

Ground travel will be busy too during the holidays. AAA said they are expecting this year to be the "third" busiest Thanksgiving travel season.

Most Americans are planning to drive to their destinations between Wednesday and Sunday.
