SAN DIEGO — Carrie Mayers reunited with the medical staff who helped her husband John Mayers in March at UC San Diego Health's East Campus Medical Center. John had been dealing with a fever and chills for about a week when he finally decided to go to the hospital.
“He thought he was gonna come here and then drive himself home which is why he drove himself,” Carried said.
John drove himself to the East Campus Medical Center since it had the shortest wait time at the moment. Carrie told CBS 8 that John was admitted and stayed in the hospital for about a week.
Doctors immediately began to run tests to see what was causing John to feel sick. By the time Carrie got to the hospital, doctors had already found something.
“They already knew that he had some sort of mass on his liver although they didn't really know what it was so they were doing some more testing but he'd already had all kinds of tests,” Carrie said.
Carrie said doctors found a 15-centimeter mass on John's liver. After undergoing several tests, he was finally able to get a diagnosis.
“It turned out to just be an infection thank god no cancer and it was E. coli,” Carrie said.
Looking back, she's appreciative of the people who were there to help during those challenging moments.
“Every single one of them, from the first nurse we had to the last, like it was such a personal experience,” Carrie said.
For Carrie, returning to the same hospital where her husband was admitted to share her testimony meant closing a chapter.
“Closure, like this is the final, I mean really getting him released fully this week has been great and then this is really the end of this part for us,” Carrie said.
Now, two months later Carrie told CBS 8 that John is great and doing what he enjoys the most, which is cycling.
