Drivers doing donuts | Valencia Park neighbors worry about reckless motorists

The dangerous drivers circle near Bonita Drive, but San Diego and National City police departments can't agree on whose jurisdiction the crime takes place in.

SAN DIEGO — Neighbors in the Valencia Park area of San Diego say they’re afraid to come outside when drivers come to the intersection of North Belmont Ave and Cervantes Ave to do donuts.

One neighbor, Gisela Ayub called CBS 8 for help after capturing several videos of several different drivers doing donuts in their cars in the intersection right outside her home on nearby Bonita Drive.

"I believe this is an emergency. They do this constantly," Gisela explained.

"There are a lot of cars parked on that street and I've heard a loud bang. I have no idea if they crashed into anybody. I don't want to come to assumptions and say that it's because of the neighborhood that they don't come right away. Sometimes, I wonder if I lived in San Carlos would they be a little quicker to come," Gisela continued.

CBS 8 went to the area in question and found several tire marks consistent with racing and driving donuts in the middle of the broad intersection.

Gisela says she's called the police several times about the issue since she moved into the neighborhood in March. She said, if police come, she says they've taken at least 40 minutes.

"They used to just drive every weekend after the party. It was a huge party and I called 9-1-1 twice that night and they never showed,” Gisela added.

Thalia Moreno and her 4-month-old son live near the intersection too.

"I can hear it from my house. It's very, very loud. You can tell that they just keep going in circles. Sometimes I wonder if they're going to hit my car because it's parked right here,” Thalia shared.

“There's always people walking around so they could always get hit so it's very dangerous. Whenever they are doing it, I don't like to come out because it's very dangerous and I don't want to get in the middle of that," Thalia added.

We reached out to San Diego police who told us the intersection in question is in National City. Dan Meyer with SDPD said residents might be calling from the San Diego side of the city border but where the crime occurs is what matters.

Thalia says no matter who’s jurisdiction it is, someone needs to come help and not take 40 minutes to get there.

"That's a long time. Especially if someone got hit. Is that the same amount of time as well? Is it going to take for someone to get hit before they come sooner,” Thalia concluded.

CBS 8 also reached out to National City Police for comment on this story. They shared a statement that says in part:

“Thank you for bringing this serious matter to our attention.  Please understand that the intersection in question, N. Belmont and Cervantes Drive, lies directly on the border between the City of National City and the City of San Diego.

A preliminary search of our NCPD Dispatch System (CAD) did not show any calls for service related to these two videos.

Based on the (2) video clips you shared, it appears that they were filmed from a residence (on) Bonita Drive in the City of San Diego.  We would recommend following up with the San Diego Police Department regarding any calls for service they may have.

Regardless of the jurisdiction, this type of unsafe driving is unacceptable and a danger to the community.  When these types of events occur and constitute a direct emergency to the public, please call 911.  If these events do not constitute an emergency, we would direct the public to call the NCPD Non-Emergency line at (619) 336-4411.

In response to these (2) concerning videos, the NCPD Patrol Division and Traffic Unit will be made aware of these events and extra patrol and traffic enforcement will be conducted."

San Diego Police also say they'll let their patrolmen in the area know there's a problem to help.
