SAN DIEGO — A domestic-assault suspect allegedly holed up Wednesday in a Valencia Park-area home, made threats to shoot police officers and refused to surrender, prompting a roughly six-hour SWAT standoff that ended in the alleged assailant's arrest.
The San Diego Police Department got an emergency call about the alleged domestic violence in the 5100 block of Coban Street at about 10:45 a.m., SDPD Officer David O'Brien said.
The alleged victim fled the home with minor injuries, and others who had been inside with her and the suspect left unharmed, Lt. Dan Meyer, a police spokesman, said. The woman told officers she believed that the alleged assailant, with whom she had a dating relationship, might have access to a gun.
The suspect -- a man in his 30s whose name was not immediately available -- also made threats to shoot police officers, according to Meyer.
After the alleged assailant refused repeated orders to exit the house and surrender, police called in special weapons and tactics personnel.
Officers evacuated other homes along the block and on a stretch of a nearby frontage road next to South Euclid Avenue while trying to persuade the man to give himself up, Meyer said.
At about 5 p.m., the suspect walked out of the house and surrendered, according to police. It was not immediately clear if he had been armed during the standoff.
