SAN DIEGO — Testimony continued in the double murder trial of a former TikTok star in Downtown San Diego Court on Monday.
Ali Abulaban is accused in the shooting deaths of his Ana and another man in an East Village apartment in October 2021.
In court Monday, two of Ana Abulaban’s friends testified, as well as various investigators. Prosecutors also showed surveillance footage captured the day of the murders.
A neighbor's Nest camera captured Abulaban entering the apartment he once shared with his estranged wife, followed by the sound of six gunshots.
As it played in court, Abulaban bowed his head and cried.
Prosecutors said he walked in and immediately shot Ana and 29-year-old Rayburn Barron as they sat on a couch.
The video later records Abulaban yelling Ana's name, then showed him in the hallway on the phone with his mom, admitting to the murders.
Abulaban's attorney doesn't deny he committed the killings but argued he wasn't thinking rationally due to the collapse of his marriage and the effect it had on his mental health. Just days prior, Ana asked Abulaban to move out.
On the morning of the fatal shootings, video showed Abulaban return to the apartment, where he vandalized the unit, then installed an app on their five-year-old daughter's iPad that allowed him to monitor live audio.
Prosecutors said while listening to the app later that day, he overheard his wife and Barron, a man she had been seeing, talking and laughing.
That's when he drove to the complex and opened fire on the victims.
A detective who analyzed his social media activity testified about conversations he had online regarding his wife and the troubles they had.
Abulaban is charged with two counts of first-degree murder. He is expected to testify during the trial, which is estimated to last another week or two.
