Vista substitute teacher arrested, accused of sex acts with child

Conner Chanove is a substitute teacher with the Vista Unified School District and coach of an all-girls water polo team in Carlsbad.

OCEANSIDE, Calif. — A Vista substitute teacher has been arrested by police and accused of sexually abusing a teenage girl.

Conner Chanove, 27, a substitute teacher with the Vista Unified School District, was arrested on Monday by Oceanside Police and charged with multiple felonies including lewd acts with a child under 14-years-old, luring a minor for sex and arranging a meeting with a minor.

A preliminary investigation by police revealed that Chanove is a coach for Seaside Water Polo Club, an all-girls team in Carlsbad. Chanove was also previously employed as a lifeguard for the City of Encinitas and the City of Carlsbad.

Chanove was booked into Vista Detention Facility on $1,000,000 bail.

"We are appalled by the thought that someone trusted to work with our children would betray their trust and innocence," Vista Unified School District said in a statement. "Please be assured that this adult will not be on any campus in the District and that our administrative team will cooperate fully with law enforcement to ensure that justice is served."

According to the Oceanside Police Department, on Nov. 18 the parents of a 13-year-old girl contacted authorities after the mother found her daughter in a car with Chanove at Guajome Lake Park in Oceanside.

Police said the mother noticed “inappropriate activity” taking place. The mother removed her daughter from the car and confronted Chanove.

Authorities attempted to arrest Chanove the night of the incident but were unable to find him.

Oceanside Police Department detectives executed a search warrant at Chanove’s home in Carlsbad.

According to authorities, the Vista Unified School District is working with detectives on the investigation.

Chanove is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 27.
