SAN DIEGO — Each year, Walmart likes to help families in need.
This year, there's a Mission Valley family who faced a medical challenge but still wanted to make the holidays special for their little boy.
When Elly Abano heard that knock on the door she had no idea who was on the other side of the door.
“Oh my gosh!,” said Abano.
A team of Walmart coaches and a manager from the Murphy Canyon store surprised her with gifts for the family.
“I appreciate this so much. I didn't expect this at all. My mind was going 100 other places,” said Abano. Elly has had a lot on her plate, she's a mom to five-year-old Isaiah and a wife but money has been tight.
“Me being out of work for so long has really pushed back our bills and everything,” said Abanon.
She was out of work because in May she underwent a kidney transplant.
“We made it through, and we are so blessed and truly blessed to even have the opportunity to be standing here right now it means a lot,” said Abano.
Through it all, her husband hasn't lost sight of what his wife means to the family. Rene Torres was in on the surprise and shared a heartfelt message about what a strong mother she has been through this medical challenge.
Their story resonated with Walmart who shared it with CBS 8.
Walmart didn't want to waste any time and used their express delivery feature, which will deliver your order in less than two hours for ten dollars.
“It's really a blessing for people when they get to take that time back especially during the holidays,” said Bobbie Jo Lewis, Walmart store manager.
Walmart donated $500 worth of gifts to the Abano Torres family.
“The community is what support's Walmart,” said Lewis.
Isaiah unwraps some of the gifts and receives a Pokemon pillow and figurines along with a soccer ball and clothes. Elly is such a gem she got a lab-grown diamond necklace and festive socks.
“I was just talking about wanting Christmas socks,” said Abano.
Dad got a $100 gift card, and the family also received a holiday meal and a Walmart+ membership for a year which includes free delivery.
“You definitely made this family very happy and appreciative of that. Good people are still out there,” said Torres.
These are more than just gifts for the family.
“Spending time with us is more than enough for him [Isaiah] but as parents we want to be able to give him the experience of opening gifts on Christmas,” said Abano.
The family can unwrap holiday memories that will forever be cherished.
“Even though we may think that we are not doing it right, to him it looks like we are doing it right and that is all we could ask for,” said Torres.
