SAN DIEGO — As families prepare for Thanksgiving, Walmart is spreading some holiday cheer by surprising shoppers with free meals.
At its Serra Mesa store, unsuspecting customers found their grocery bills paid for, offering relief during a time when many are feeling the pinch of rising costs.
James Matsuhara and his son Ricardo were among the lucky recipients. Their bill of $98.53 was completely covered by Walmart.
"We make it work and make ends meet," Matsuhara said, reflecting the financial challenges many families face.
Another shopper, Marc Killman, saw his $218 grocery bill reduced by nearly half.
"I was about to take out a loan here," Killman joked, highlighting the impact of the gesture.
Store manager Bobbie Jo Lewis personally stepped in to assist customers, saying, "Today I would like to cover your Thanksgiving meal."
The surprise comes as a welcome relief for many. According to the American Farm Bureau Federation, families living in the western region are expected to spend around $67 for a Thanksgiving meal this year. While this is less than last year, it remains higher than pre-pandemic prices.
Walmart's generosity extended beyond covering grocery bills. The company also provided a free Walmart+ membership and offered to donate a meal to family in need in need or to the Salvation Army.
For recipients like Ricardo, the impact is significant. "It's a relief for sure so my parents don't have to spend as much money," he said.
