$15 million water quality initiative completed at the Del Mar Fairgrounds

A new water retention and treatment system aims to keep polluted wastewater out of the ocean and lagoons.

DEL MAR, Calif. — The Del Mar Fairgrounds says it’s stepping up its efforts to improve water runoff.

On Wednesday the 22nd District Agricultural Association debuted its $15 million water quality initiative.

This project started in 2017 and is a functional storm water retention and treatment system.

The fair says it’s a multi-step water treatment facility that includes a retention lake located within the racetrack infield, a constructed biological wetland designed to naturally filter water and a treatment and testing center.

This will help keep contaminated water from polluting nearby oceans and lagoons.

The CEO of the 22nd District Agricultural Association says this is the first fairground facility to do this in California.

“What we are doing is capturing the water on the fairgrounds from our animal feeding areas so where the horses, pigs and cows that might be depending the time of year capturing that into our holding ponds on the fairgrounds,” said Carlene Moore, 22dnd District Agricultural Association.

Managers of the project say since operation, they’ve only had to discharge water twice. All other times the water is recycled through its ponds.
