Kitchen Fire | Fire crews contain wildland fire near Lake Morena in San Diego County

CalFire assisted fire crews battling a fire near Kitchen Creek Road in the community of Lake Morena. The 47-acre fire was 50% contained by Monday night.

SAN DIEGO — A fire broke out near Kitchen Creek Road near Lake Morena in San Diego County on Monday morning. Smoke could be seen from miles away.

Airborne and ground crews from Cal Fire assisted crews from Cleveland National Forest to battle the backcountry fire, given the name #KitchenFire.

In an update by Cleveland National Forest on Twitter at 8:44 p.m., the fire had burned 47 acres and was 50% contained. Crews planned to work through the night to mop up and complete containment lines around the perimeter.

There were 13 engines, 4 crews, 6 aircraft responding. Smoke was visible from the I-8 and surrounding communities.

Evacuations

Officials evacuated Boulder Oaks Campground as a precaution, according to Cleveland National Forest.

Road closures

Around 11 a.m., California Highway Patrol closed Old Highway 80 between Kitchen Creek Road and Buckman.

The EB I-8 Kitchen Creek off-ramp also closed due to the fire, Caltrans announced around 12:30 p.m. It reopened by 3 p.m, Caltrans said.

Prepare for a Wildfire evacuation

CalFire has built a list of things to have ready in case you and your family are evacuated during any wildfire or disaster. 

Ensure your wildfire ‘Go Bag’ includes:

  • A 3-day supply of non-perishable food & 3 gallons of water per person
  • A map with at least 2 evacuation routes
  • Necessary prescriptions or medications
  • A change of clothes & extra eyeglasses/contact lenses
  • Extra car keys, credit cards, cash, or traveler’s checks
  • A first aid kit & sanitation supplies
  • A flashlight & battery-powered radio with extra batteries
  • Copies of important documents (birth certificates, passports, etc.)
  • Pet food & water

Always have sturdy shoes and a flashlight near your bed, ready for sudden night evacuations.

If time allows, consider adding:

  • Valuables that are easy to carry
  • Family photos and irreplaceable items
  • Personal computer data on hard drives and disks
  • Chargers for cell phones and laptops
