DEL MAR, Calif. — Firefighters stopped the forward rate of a brush fire that erupted near Del Mar Heights on Tuesday afternoon.
San Diego firefighters responded to the brush fire that sparked near Carmel Valley Road and Via Aprilia on Tuesday around 10:45 a.m. It was one acre when it started, according to Mónica Muñoz, spokesperson for SD Fire-Rescue. It grew quickly and forced widespread evacuations from residents in the area.
Fire officials told CBS 8 that the fire had burned 23 acres and was 80% contained as of Thursday morning.
Two firefighters were hospitalized and treated for heat exhaustion, Muñoz said. Both firefighters were later released and are recovering at home, according to the San Diego Fire Department.
Muñoz said about 2,500 residents were asked to evacuate and 1,400 residents in the area were issued warnings. San Diego Police lifted the evacuation orders at around 7:20 p.m.
San Diego Police lifted all road closures issued in the area at around 8:46 p.m.
