Woman keys Tesla in act of brazen vandalism caught on camera

The victim filed a police report hours after the incident occurred and San Diego Police told CBS 8 a detective has been assigned to the case.

SAN DIEGO — A mother and son came back to their car after a doctor’s appointment in Mission Valley and found deep scratches on the driver-side door. The brazen act of vandalism was recorded by cameras on the victim’s car.

“She like goes into her trunk and she like gets her key out, and you can see, she comes around and that’s when she keys the car,” said the victim’s son, who didn’t want to be identified by name.

The 2019 Tesla Model 3 was in a parking garage at the Kaiser Medical Center off Vandever Avenue while they were at a medical appointment.

“We come out and we see the scratch on the whole side of the car and we were like, ‘What happened?’ I immediately noticed it from like far away and I knew that wasn’t there before,” said the victim’s son. “I immediately got into the car and checked the dash cam and that’s when I went over all the video.

The driver-side camera recorded the whole incident and he couldn’t believe it.

“We got her the first time that she came through, keyed the car and then she comes around again and she keys the car for the second time,” he explained. “I was like, ‘Oh my God.’  It was like gut-wrenching.”

Then the woman gets into a white Honda and backs out. There was no front license plate on the suspect’s car, but fortunately, the victim’s son had his own car parked nearby and caught the back license plate on camera.

When CBS 8 ran the plate, it came back to a woman who lives in San Diego, so we gave her a call.

CBS 8 is choosing not to identify the woman at this time.

She said she owns a white Honda but that she doesn’t know anything about the Tesla being keyed or vandalized. The victim filed a police report hours after the incident occurred and SDPD told CBS 8 a detective has been assigned to the case.

It’ll be more than $3,000 to fix, and to add salt to injury, the car had actually been paint-corrected and ceramic coated a few months earlier.

“It’s hard especially since this is just a random lady that we didn’t even do anything to, never met her, don’t know who she is,” he said.

If you have any information on who may have committed this act of vandalism, you’re urged to contact Crimestoppers at 888-580-8477.
