SAN DIEGO — The City of San Diego is repairing a major leak in a 36-inch water main off Black Mountain in Rancho Peñasquitos.
City workers had to bring in heavy equipment to dig down and locate the break in the water transmission line of Carmel Valley Road.
Repairs started on Wednesday. Within days, neighbor John Jaskowiak noticed water flow into his backyard almost completely dried up.
“Something the city is doing up there is making an improvement, because this water just slowed down and stopped here in, literally, 24 hours,” said Jaskowiak.
Jaskowiak has been in contact with CBS 8 ever since we started reporting two weeks ago on flooding in people's backyards in Rancho Peñasquitos below Black Mountain.
Last week, mountain biker Amy Harris emailed CBS 8 about water flowing near the entrance to Black Mountain Open Space Park, where the water main repairs currently are taking place.
“I saw your report on the houses that had flooding in their backyard,” said Harris.
Days later, city workers responded. “I didn't think I was gonna even get a response. And then here you were on Monday, and now there's trucks out there and the road’s closed. So, it's pretty exciting,” said Harris.
The large water main connects to a cement reservoir above the neighborhood on the side of Black Mountain. Recycled water is stored in a nearby green water tank at the same location.
Unfortunately, the water flow continues further downstream on Wescott Court. Three next-door neighbors there have dug trenches in their backyards so they can pump the water out to the street.
City of San Diego response
CBS 8 reached out to the city for an update and a city spokesperson responded with the following statement,
"City crews are continuing to work around the clock to repair the leak on the 36-inch-diameter transmission main on the south side of Carmel Valley Road, just west of Valle Del Sur Court. The crews expect these repairs to be completed and the trench refilled by early next week. Last week, City crews also completed trenching work to investigate the 36-inch, 12-inch and 8-inch diameter water mains along Black Mountain Road, between Calle De Vista Oeste and Westvale Road. All three trenches were completely dry, with no signs of a leak... Crews will be continuing to investigate in the area this week."
